Lincoln Police Department reports for Thursday, July 2

Property damage on June 27 at 10:53 p.m.; 13th Street, 10 feet west of North Jackson Street

--Michael E. Buck, male, 41, of Lincoln; 2003 Subaru Baja

Saturday night, Lincoln units were dispatched to the intersection of North Jackson and 13th Street because a fire hydrant that had been knocked over and water was coming out of the ground. The fire hydrant, at the northeast corner of the intersection, was found lying on the curb, and pieces of a vehicle were lying in the water and around the hydrant.

A resident at 527 N. Adams St., one block west of the intersection, said that about 10 minutes before police arrived, he heard a loud noise from the intersection, went outside and saw a pickup truck pulling another pickup truck off the fire hydrant. He said that the front pickup had a chain and began to pull the second pickup down the street and away from the scene.

The following night, police received a call from Michael Buck, who wanted to talk about the fire hydrant he had crashed into the night before. An officer went to his home and observed that the front of Buck's vehicle was heavily damaged. Buck said that he had been driving down 13th Street and was going to turn to head south onto North Jackson Street. He said it was raining and he lost control of his pickup, went off the road and ran into the fire hydrant.

He said that his wife, Kathy Buck, came in another vehicle to pull his pickup off the hydrant. He then drove his damaged vehicle back to his house and parked in the garage.

He said he left the scene because he did not want to turn in another claim to his insurance company, as he already had a couple of claims and did not want his rates to go up. He said he didn't think the damage was that extensive until he got his vehicle back into his garage. He thought it was too late to call the police, since he had already left.

Buck was issued citations for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, failure to report an accident to police authority and disobeying a stop sign.
