Meanwhile, New England will see diminishing showers and isolated thunderstorms as temperatures drop across the region.

In the West, scattered showers are forecast in Southern California. Temperatures in northern California and the Pacific Northwest coasts are expected to bounce back to above average over the next few days.

Elsewhere, storms appear likely to batter the mountainous regions of the central Great Basin. Unsettling weather is also expected to rattle the northern Plains, including areas between eastern Idaho and eastern North Dakota.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from 30 degrees at Copper Mountain, Colo., to 106 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
