[June 17, 2009]  (AP)  Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to drench much of the Midwest and eastern United States on Wednesday.

Severe thunderstorms appear likely to strike parts of the central Plains into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys and southern Appalachians. Large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes may break out between mid-afternoon and early evening.

The Northeast should remain dry and cool during the day, with clouds increasing as rain develops in the evening.

Much of the Southwest will experience below-normal temperatures as scattered showers and thunderstorms stretch from the central Great Basin into the northern Rockies.

The Deep South will be ruled by heat and high humidity. Heat indices in Texas will hold steady in the 100s with no chance of rainfall.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from 34 degrees in Aspen, Colo., to 107 degrees in Pecos, Texas.
