Police: Va. dad lured son home, then shot him

[June 29, 2009]  AXTON, Va. (AP) -- A college student who survived a shooting that killed his mother and brother told police his father lured him to the family's house in southwest Virginia.

Henry Carter remained in fair condition at a North Carolina hospital Monday morning.

Police say Carter's father, 56-year-old William Ronald Carter, fatally shot his wife Bonnie and their 29-year-old son William Ronald Carter Jr. shortly after midnight Sunday, and then shot himself. All three bodies were found in the basement of the family's burning home in Axton.

Henry Carter was wounded but escaped and fled to neighbor Deborah Akers' house.

Akers told The Roanoke Times the 22-year-old said his father called him at Radford University student and said something was wrong with his brother and he needed to come home.
