[March 03, 2009] (AP) High pressure will dominate the eastern half of the country on Tuesday, while a storm system moves across the Northwest.

Rain and snow were forecast across the interior West. The rain will be heavy at times and several inches of snow are possible in the mountains.

The storm will also reach down across the Southwest and the batch of heavy rain and snow will sweep across northern California and parts of northwestern Nevada. The rest of California and Nevada will see partly to mostly clear skies, while the Four Corners can expect a mix of sun and clouds.

The wet weather associated with the low pressure will reach the northern Plains in the afternoon as a light wintry mix.

Farther south, the central Plains can expect partly to mostly clear skies during the day, while the southern Plains will see mostly sunny skies. However, winds are expected to be fairly strong throughout the day.

The Northeast will see mostly sunny skies throughout the day, except for the upper New England states, which will still see some snow showers associated with the previous storm. Parts of New York can expect a few inches of new lake-effect snow.

The Southeast can expect mostly sunny skies, although temperatures may be cold enough for frost to form overnight and early in the morning.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of minus 31 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis., to a high of 91 degrees at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz.
