[March 06, 2009]  SALEM, N.H. (AP) -- Police in New Hampshire say they arrested a car thief as he tried to sneak onto an impound lot to get items from the vehicle.

Police in Salem were chasing the man Tuesday night when he crashed the car and got away.

Massachusetts authorities called Wednesday with a tip that the suspect, 29-year-old Nathan Morton of Atkinson, N.H., planned to try to retrieve some things from the impounded car.

Police parked the car near an outbuilding, and an officer hidden inside saw Morton approach from woods behind the police station. Morton was arrested without incident and faces nine charges, including resisting arrest and reckless driving. Morton did not have a lawyer Thursday afternoon, according to Salem District Court.
