Seismologist Amy Vaughn of the U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.7 quake struck at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday.
It was centered at a depth of about 3.5 miles, and three miles south of the small town of Bombay Beach. That's 90 miles east of San Diego.
A magnitude-3.0 quake struck a few minutes later. Many small quakes have shaken the area in recent days.
An Imperial County sheriff's deputy said there had been no reports of any damage. The deputy said he felt shaking while driving his car 13 miles from the epicenter but thought it was the wind.
