[May 06, 2009]  (AP)  Severe weather was expected to continue pounding the Eastern United States on Wednesday.

A storm system stretching from New England into the Southeast was to bring scattered showers throughout the day, bringing the threat of flooding. The system has a history of producing severe weather with tornadoes.

The Gulf states and Mid-Atlantic were expected to see the strongest storms, with strong winds, heavy downpours and possible tornadoes.

To the north, a cold front was expected to kick up light and scattered showers across the Great Lakes, though temperatures were to remain in the 70s.

Temperatures in the northern Plains were to drop into the 60s, while the central and southern Plains were to stay hot and dry with highs in the 80s and 90s.

In the West, light rain was to fall over Oregon and Washington, with scattered clouds extending into northern California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Berthoud Pass, Colo., to a high of 104 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
