[May 12, 2009]  (AP)  Unsettled weather was expected to persist over the Gulf States on Tuesday.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were to continue along the tail end of the storm system over the Gulf coast of Florida. The storm has a history of producing strong winds up to 60 mph and large hail.

Mostly sunny skies and warm conditions were expected along the East Coast, with the Northeast reaching into the 60s and the Mid-Atlantic reaching into the mid- to upper 70s. But temperatures were expected to drop quickly into the 30s overnight. Overnight frost was on tap for the Lower Great Lakes and Northeast.

In the central U.S., scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected across the Great Plains. Breezy and warm conditions were forecast for the northern Plains, and dry and breezy conditions to the south, with an increased fire threat.

The Pacific Northwest was to see scattered showers, with warmer and drier conditions in California and the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 105 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
