[May 15, 2009]  (AP)  Strong thunderstorms were expected across the Plains and Midwest Friday as a low-pressure system swept across the regions.

Winds from these thunderstorms were likely to cause some damage, especially in the central and southern Plains, while hail was to be the primary threat in the Missouri and Ohio valleys.

DonutsThe upper Mississippi Valley was also to see some thunderstorms with hail, but large damaging hailstones were unlikely north of Missouri.

The East Coast was to see clearing skies as a lingering front passed off the coast, and warming temperatures. Most areas were forecast to return to normal highs on Friday, with above-normal readings possible for the weekend.

In the Southeast, temperatures were not expected to warm up quite as much. Thunderstorms with frequent lightning were possible, but severe weather wasn't expected.

Out West, skies were expected to clear and temperatures soar to near-record levels.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Wolf Point, Mont., to a high of 106 degrees at Twentynine Palms, Calif.
