[May 17, 2009]  (AP)  A cold front is expected to plow through the eastern half of the country on Saturday, likely causing rain and thunderstorms from the Southern Plains through the Southeast and Northeast.

Forecasters say the conditions could be right for the formation of tornadoes in southwestern Texas and parts of the Northeast.

A large ridge of high pressure is expected to build along the West Coast, bringing a warming trend to the Southwest, Great Basin, and even parts of the Intermountain West.

Temperatures in the Northeast are expected to rise to the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast is forecast to see temperatures in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The Southern Plains will likely rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Southwest should see temperatures in the 90s and 100s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 25 degrees at Stanley, Idaho to a high of 110 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
