[May 19, 2009]  (AP)  Cool and breezy conditions were expected to drop into the eastern United States on Tuesday, triggering light and scattered showers across the upper Midwest.

Record high temperatures were expected in the northern Plains, with the Dakotas reaching the mid-70s and the central Plains approaching 90.

In the Gulf states, scattered showers and thunderstorms were to develop over Florida and southern Georgia. Slow and continuous showers were to cause flooding issues over the region.

New total rainfall was to remain less than an inch, with more anticipated in areas seeing thunderstorms.

Temperatures in the 70s and 80s and sunny skies were on tap for the rest of the East Coast.

In the northern Rockies, light rain showers and snow at higher elevations were forecast. Isolated and dry high-level thunderstorms were expected in the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 18 degrees at Spincich Lake, Mich., to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
