[May 20, 2009] (AP) The Florida Peninsula was expected to continue receiving excessive rainfall on Wednesday from a slowly moving low-pressure system.

Wet, eastern winds were to continue streaming across the state, generating moderate to heavy showers and rain bands. Amounts of up to 3 to 6 inches were likely over northeastern Florida through Thursday morning, which makes flooding possible.

Winds were expected to increase to 20 or 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, over South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, creating pounding surf. Temperatures were to stay well below normal across the Southeast.

Light rain was forecast for the northern Plains in the morning, with showers and thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and night into the Upper Midwest.

In the West, rain and high-elevation snow was on tap for parts of Washington and the northern Intermountain region. Farther south, scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected across the Four Corners.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 22 degrees at Saranac Lake, N.Y., to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
