[May 22, 2009] (AP) A large low-pressure system was expecting to continue dumping heavy rain and strong thunderstorms on the Gulf Coast from Florida to Louisiana on Friday.

Though the system was not expected to develop into a tropical cyclone, several more inches of rain was to drop as it approached the coast.

Meanwhile, a weak cold front across the Rockies and northern Plains was to produce scattered rain showers from the Southwest through the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Dry conditions were forecast from the Ohio Valley through New England.

The West Coast was to remain dry and relatively mild, with the warmest temperatures occurring in the Great Basin.

Temperatures in the Northeast were to rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast would see temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The southern part of the Plains was to see 70s, 80s, and 90s, while the northern Plains would see temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The Northwest was to get 70s, while the Southwest would see temperatures in the 80s and 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 18 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 101 degrees at Palm Springs, Calif.
