[May 27, 2009]  (AP)  Rain, thunderstorms and strong winds were expected Wednesday from the mid-Mississippi Valley into the upper Great Lakes.

Heavy localized rainfall carried the risk for local flooding. As the system lifts northeastward, numerous thunderstorm clusters and significant rain were expected in the afternoon along a front stretching from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley.

Some of the storms were expected to be severe, with hail and strong winds. More thunderstorms with localized downpours and possible hail were expected across the Southeast and the inland areas of Florida.

In the Northeast, scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to lift from the northern Mid-Atlantic into southern New England.

In the West, moisture from the south was to fuel pockets of showers and thunderstorm clusters across the Four Corners and higher elevations of California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at Mt. Washington, N.H., to a high of 102 degrees at Grand Prairie, Texas.
