[November 12, 2009]  What happens when your longtime employer decides that it is time to call it quits?

It's a problem all over the country. Whether it be a matter of someone deciding to retire, or a business that is no longer sustaining itself, employees are finding themselves in a lurch.

That is what happened to three of the four-lady team that is now running the Absolute Harmony Salon and Day Spa.

Melissa Hyde, Kay Littrell and Tisha Morrow all worked for Janssen's Family Hair Care. The business had formerly been Hairtastics and before that Fantastic Sams, located in the Heritage Plaza strip mall on Lincoln's west side.

When the owners recently announced that they were going to close the shop, Hyde, Littrell and Morrow knew that they had a limited amount of time to get themselves up and running or they would lose at least a portion of their clientele.

As the three began making plans and searching for a new location, Stacy Morrow, who had worked at Hairtastics with Littrell, was added to the mix.

Together the four located a space on Broadway Street, and literally in one week turned it from a vacant storefront to a fully functional hair salon and spa.

"We didn't have much notice, and I knew the owner of this building and that it was empty," Hyde said. "He gave us a good deal to come in here."

Tisha Morrow explained that they took possession of the building on Monday, moved in their equipment, then started cleaning and painting. By the following Monday all that was left was to polish the floors, and on Tuesday morning they opened for business.

"We had lots of help from a lot of good friends," Littrell added.

Tisha agreed: "If it wasn't for all of them, we wouldn't be open!"

All four said that they thought taking a downtown location was a very good idea. They commented on how much traffic they see downtown in comparison to Heritage Plaza. They all believe that their location just off the square on Broadway will be a big asset in their growth and success.

Absolute Harmony is a full-service hair salon, plus a day spa.

Their services include haircuts, color, perms, artificial nail services, manicures, pedicures, facials and body waxing.

All four operators are licensed and collectively have approximately 70 years of experience.

Hyde and Stacy Morrow are also licensed instructors, which is what enables them to offer the spa services.

While they have been open only a few days, the four are already making plans for the future. They intend to add a tanning salon and offer massage therapy in the future.

Hyde said that because they were able to act so quickly in getting the shop up and running, many of their customers from Janssen's are now customers at Absolute Harmony. Of course they want and need more and are working to offer hours that will conform to the busy lifestyles of their clients.

Their shop hours are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and evenings by appointment. They do take walk-ins, though appointments are preferred.

Absolute Harmony Salon and Day Spa is located at 521 Broadway, and their phone number is 217-732-7267.
