Most of the nearly $500,000 is coming from programs that help to
repay the loans of health care workers who go to work in underserved
areas.
U.S. Rep. Bill Foster's office says the money is coming from $500
million given to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in
the federal stimulus package.
Sen. Roland Burris says Illinois' money was part of 63 awards
totaling more than $7.6 million announced by HHS Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius.
The lawmakers say the loan repayment recruitment programs require
two-year work commitments by health care workers.
Those who qualify include primary care providers, as well as
dental and mental health providers.
