[October 14, 2009]  (AP)  The storm system in the eastern Pacific that once was Super Typhoon Melor in the western Pacific was forecast to continue to bringing wet and windy conditions across the West Coast on Wednesday.

HardwareThe storm center was expected to remain off the coast and continue drawing Pacific moisture across the West. The associated cold front would begin to weaken as it slowly moved southeast across Southern California and central Great Basin on Wednesday morning.

Forecasters did not expect the total precipitation amount on Wednesday to be as impressive as Tuesday. Nevertheless, moderate to locally heavy precipitation was expected to continue from the coast to the Rockies during the day but was forecast to taper off Wednesday night and Thursday as high pressure in the Great Basin strengthened, shutting off moisture and energy from the Pacific. In addition, winds would continue to be a concern for the interior of California and central Great Basin on Wednesday morning. Widespread south to southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph were expected.

Moving eastward, a front that draped across the Southern states combined with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico was expected to continue affecting the weather from the Plains to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast on Wednesday. Numerous showers and thunderstorms would continue over portions of the Plains, Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valley, slowly moving onto the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. The heaviest rains would be across the Gulf Coast states, with a threat for severe weather.

Farther north, cool air and high pressure would take control from the northern Plains to the Great Lakes and Northeast. Temperatures would remain below average. Energy would move out of the Rockies, producing light to moderate precipitation over portions of the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Forecasters said parts of the northern Plains could see some snow and freezing rain.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 14 degrees at Hibbing, Minn., to a high of 96 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
