[September 03, 2009]  (AP)  Most moisture from Tropical Storm Jimena was expected to remain over Mexico, but some would advect northeastward into the Southwest, triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Elsewhere in the U.S., a front was forecast to linger over the Southeast, scattered showers would persist in the Plains, and a front was to move through the northern Rockies on Thursday.

A strong high pressure system was expected to continue to bring mild weather to the eastern U.S. Below normal temperatures were expected with highs in the 70s in the northern regions and mostly sunny skies stretching from the Mississippi River Valley into the Mid-Atlantic states and Northeast. However, a lingering front was to remain over the Gulf states, allowing for another day of afternoon scattered showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall totals under a quarter of an inch.

In the Plains, a small trough of low pressure was forecast to move in from the Rockies, but would battle with the strong effects from the dominating high pressure system. Thus, precipitation was not likely and would be minimal; if thunderstorms develop, they were not likely to turn severe.

Farther west, a trough of low pressure was to push into the Pacific Northwest and kick up scattered clouds, while also shoving a front eastward over the northern Rockies. Light showers were expected to pop up anywhere along this front.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Leota, Mich., to a high of 117 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
