[September 10, 2009]  ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) -- A tentative three-year agreement has been reached with professors at a suburban Detroit university who had gone on strike, canceling classes for about 18,000 students.

A statement posted on Oakland University's Web site says terms of the deal won't be available until it's ratified by the professors' union, but fall semester classes are to begin Thursday morning.

The teachers have been on strike since Sept. 3, the day classes were to begin at the university in Rochester, about 20 miles north of Detroit. The union authorized a walkout after the university proposed a three-year wage freeze along with cuts in health-insurance benefits.
