When asked whether a plan to reduce California's prison population was ready, Cameron said, "We are still looking at our options, but we will have something by the 18th." Schwarzenegger had promoted a plan in the Legislature that would have reduced the inmate population by 37,000 over two years, but it was watered down in a bill sent to his desk Friday. That legislation will reduce the inmate population by 16,000 in the current fiscal year through diversions and early releases.
