The nation's weather

[September 17, 2009]  (AP)  Unsettling weather activity was forecast to persist Thursday in the southeastern quadrant of the nation due to a stubborn storm system.

The lingering low pressure system would continue to pull abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to produce areas of scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms from the eastern portions of the southern Plains into the eastern valleys and the Southeast. The heaviest amounts of precipitation and the strongest thunderstorms were expected to develop across the Ozarks, southeastern Oklahoma and northeastern Texas.

A frontal boundary associated with the low was expected to kick up additional showers and storms as it stretched through the eastern valleys and the Mid-Atlantic. Forecasters said excessive rainfall associated with the aforementioned precipitation events may produce areas of flash flooding throughout the Southeast.

In the West, a weaker area of low pressure located over the Four Corners would trigger areas of scattered showers with periods of locally heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms in the Southern Rockies. The remainder of the West was expected to experience quieter weather activity Thursday as a cold front exited the Pacific Northwest and high pressure built back into the region by the afternoon.

Elsewhere, a sagging trough of low pressure from eastern Canada would yield to another day of fairly cool weather in the Northeast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 31 degrees at Bellemont, Ariz., to a high of 109 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
