[September 26, 2009]  (AP)  The Eastern U.S. will continue to see unsettled weather Saturday as a cold front lingers over the region.  [click on map for larger image]

A low pressure system will continue tracking eastward, over the Mississippi River Valley and into the East Coast, while pushing a cold front with it. Fed by ample moisture pouring in from the Gulf of Mexico, scattered showers will develop over the Eastern Great Lakes, stretch into the New England States, and down the coast into the Southeast.

This system does not have a history of producing severe thunderstorms, but as it is a slow-moving front, it could cause flooding problems in the South. Expect periods of heavy rain over the Tennessee and Ohio valleys, with rainfall totals between 1 to 2 inches, while most of the Eastern U.S. will see less than half an inch.

The extreme Northeast will see cold conditions as overnight lows will dip to near freezing values again Wednesday night. Frost and freeze warnings have been issued. Daytime highs will only reach into the lower 60s in the North, while the South will reach into the 70s and 80s.

Meanwhile, a small wave of low pressure will track through the Northern and Central Plains. This will bring cloudy skies with it, and may trigger scattered showers.

However, farther west, a cold front will dip into the Northern Rockies from western Canada. This will kick up strong winds and push cool and dry air in from the north.

Elsewhere, a strong ridge over the West Coast will allow for warm and dry weather Saturday. Expect the Pacific Northwest to see highs near 80 again, while the Southwest will reach into the 90s and 100s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at Charleston, Nev., to a high of 110 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
