[April 20, 2010]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast to move into the eastern third of the nation Thursday as a low pressure system trekked eastward into the lower Great Lakes.

The system would continue to support numerous rain showers, with periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the Great Lakes and New England. Cold air pouring in on the backside of this low would drop temperatures across the Great Lakes and allow for some snow showers across the northern regions. The system would also support a very active cold front that would stretch across the Ohio Valley through the central Gulf Coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop along this front as it advanced toward the Appalachians during the afternoon. Thunderstorms developing over areas from southern New York through portions of Georgia may turn severe with large hail and damaging winds.

In the West, a strong cold front was forecast to move through the Pacific Northwest and the northern Intermountain West with colder temperatures and mixed precipitation. Meanwhile, high pressure would keep the rest of the West under fair and quiet weather activity.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 2 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 95 degrees at Louisa, Va.
