[April 22, 2010]  NEW YORK (AP) -- "Race" has recouped on Broadway.

InsuranceDavid Mamet's provocative play has paid back its $2.5 million production costs, the first new play of the season to do so. The announcement was made Wednesday by the show's lead producer, Jeffrey Richards.

"Race" opened last December at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and stars James Spader, David Alan Grier, Kerry Washington and Richard Thomas. It concerns two high-priced lawyers -- one white, the other black -- who have been asked to defend a wealthy white man accused of raping a young black woman. Its limited engagement ends June 13.

But Mamet will be back on Broadway next season. A revival of his "A Life in the Theatre," starring Patrick Stewart, opens in the fall.
