HardwareA low pressure system over the region would continue tracking eastward into the Plains. This was forecast to create a cold front that would extend from the northern Plains and upper Midwest into the central Rockies. Scattered showers were expected to develop behind this front, with light snow at higher elevations. Another 2-4 inches of new snow was expected over the northern Rockies and Great Basin, while the central and southern Rockies would see only 1-2 inches. Ahead of this front, windy conditions were expected, particularly in the southern Plains. Gusts up to 45 mph were expected in Texas and Oklahoma.

Forecasters said the upper Midwest and northern Plains may also see some strong winds with gusts up to 25 mph, with light rain showers and mild thunderstorms developing along the front. Less than half an inch of rain was expected in the Dakotas and Minnesota, with up to an inch possible in areas of thunderstorm development. Behind this system, the West Coast would see drier weather Thursday as the system moved farther into the Rockies. Forecasters said a few lingering showers may persist in the Pacific Northwest, but most of California would see some cloudy skies.

The eastern half of the country would see another mild weather day. A ridge of high pressure would build over the East Coast, allowing for warm and sunny conditions. New England would reach into the lower 70s, while the Southeast would reach into the 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 15 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis., to a high of 95 degrees at Williams Gateway Airport, Ariz.
