[August 04, 2010]  (AP)  A cold front was forecast to dip through the Midwest on Wednesday, bringing with it the threat of severe weather from Missouri to Ohio.

Heavy rain was likely with these storms, and high winds may cause some damage as the storms gain strength late in the afternoon and into the evening.

More showers and thunderstorms would develop in the West as a storm began gathering over Colorado. Precipitation from this system would likely fall throughout the Rocky Mountains, but some wet weather was expected to spill over into the high Plains.

In the East, evening showers and thunderstorms would be scattered throughout the region from New England through Florida.

Other than the high Plains, the nation's midsection would see generally clear but hot weather Wednesday. Temperatures would once again break into the triple digits throughout Oklahoma and Kansas, with 90-degree highs expected throughout the entire region. Heat index values would be exceptionally high, in some cases rising into the 120s.

While the country east of the Rockies sweltered, the West would continue to see cool weather, as it has all summer. Temperatures along the coast would remain well below normal, with more moderate inland temperatures.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
