[August 09, 2010]  (AP)  Wet and stormy weather was forecast to continue throughout the Florida Peninsula on Monday.

Abundant moisture and sufficient instability associated with a weak, non-tropical low pressure system located about 150 miles east of St. Augustine, Fla., would fuel scattered to numerous disorganized showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds and periodic heavy rainfall over the Florida Peninsula. The slow movement of these storms would create chances of significant flooding in South Florida.

Elsewhere in the South, forecasters said additional clusters of showers and thunderstorms may develop over the Southeast. Along with storms, hot and humid weather would persist over the Deep South. Daytime highs from areas of the southern and the central Plains through portions of the eastern valleys and the Southeast were expected to reach into the upper 90s to mid-100s. Hot temperatures and high humidity levels over these regions would allow heat indexes to range from the lower 100s to mid-110s.

In the North, a cold front would move into the Northeast, triggering showers and thunderstorms from northern New England through the lower Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. Warmer temperatures and high humidity would return to these areas as high pressure weakens. Showers in the North were expected to spread into the Mid-Atlantic during the next couple of days.

Behind this system, low pressure would fuel more thunderstorms in the Midwest. Storms in the northern and central Plains eastward into Iowa, southwestern Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois may turn severe with strong wind gusts.

In the West, a low pressure trough over the Four Corners would direct showers and thunderstorms across New Mexico, Colorado and into the northern Rockies as it advanced northeastward.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 34 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 109 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
