At last night's meeting, sculptor David Seagraves was on hand to
sign the contract to create a bronze soldier. The committee also
handed the sculptor a check for $9,250 as a down payment on the
work. The check represents one-fourth of the total cost of the
statue. This money came from the insurance fund that the county
received when the statue was destroyed in December of 2008.
Bill Donath, committee treasurer, said that the committee's funds
on hand (excluding the county's funds) total $5,552.96 and that
there was more good news.
The Clifford "Sonny" Sullivan family was at the meeting and
presented Donath with a $100 check in memory of the late
committeeman who had worked on the monument replacement project from
its inception.
Donath also said that a member of the Woods Foundation told him
that the foundation would be interested in funding the new plaques
that would list all the county's Civil War veterans.
Seagraves told the committee that he would begin the 18-inch
scale model of the soldier almost immediately and expected it to be
available for committee approval in just a few months. Seagraves
said he was confident that after the approval, the full-size
sculpture would be finished by March 2011.
The committee intends to have an unveiling of the new monument in
April, timed with the 150th anniversary of the first shots being
fired on Fort Sumter.
