[August 10, 2010]  (AP)  Storms were expected to move into the central U.S., following a strong warm front Tuesday.

A lInsuranceow pressure system would strengthen as it moved off the Rockies and into the Plains. Flow around the system would pull warm and moist air in from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop along the front. These storms have a history of turning severe; thus, strong winds, heavy downpours and large hail were expected to sweep through the northern Plains and upper Midwest.

Meanwhile in the East, a ridge of high pressure would continue pushing a front southward down the East Coast. This front would move from the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley and Mid-Atlantic states, where it would produce widespread scattered showers. This front had not yet produced severe storms but was likely to do so as it pushed southward and obtained more moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

Heat advisories would remain in effect over the southern Plains and southeastern U.S. as highs remained in the 90s and high humidity pushed heat indexes over 100 degrees.

Farther south, a tropical wave in the Gulf of Mexico had a low, 30 percent chance of tropical storm formation. The system would continue kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms over Florida and the Florida Keys, as well as the rest of the Gulf states, as it moved northwestward throughout the day.

In the West, a trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest would bring more cool and cloudy conditions to the region. Most of California would remain slightly cooler with cloudy conditions along the coasts.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 34 degrees at Mammoth Lakes, Calif., to a high of 110 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
