[August 12, 2010]  BELLEVUE, Ky. (AP) -- A group which had left a northern Kentucky bar with Christopher Luttrell feared the worst when their friend went for a late-night swim in the Ohio River.

The friends called police at about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. Police called out water rescue teams from Boone and Campbell counties, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Bellevue Fire Department.

The Kentucky Enquirer reported Luttrell's father came down to the riverbank, worried about his 26-year-old son.

Just before 4 a.m. Wednesday, police said Luttrell called his father to say he swam to the Cincinnati side and was safe.

Police Maj. Lee Estepp said he plans to talk to the prosecutor about possible charges.

Estepp said people just don't drink and swim because authorities are afraid they will drown.
