St. John UCC, genealogical meeting, Salvation Army back to school
supplies,YMCA school days programs and
the park district in Close Up

On
Sunday, Aug. 15, St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln,
as part of its 150th anniversary celebration, will honor members of
the congregation who have gone into ordained or specialized
ministry. Speakers will include Mrs. Elsie Bock Piotraschke, who
served as a commissioned missionary nurse in Ghana; the Rev. John
Bock, who served congregations in Indiana and Ohio; and the Rev. Ted
Michalsen, who is currently serving as pastor of First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Andover, Ohio. St. John
United Church of Christ has had five members enter the ordained
ministry. The Sunday service will be at 10 a.m. with a dinner to
follow in the Fellowship Hall.

The
Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society monthly
meeting will be on Monday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at 114 N. Chicago
St. in downtown Lincoln. John Durdle from Hopedale will talk about
his trip to Ostfriesland, Germany. The public is invited.
 The
Salvation Army of Logan County will distribute school supplies to
eligible families on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, between
2:00pm and 4:00 pm at the Keest Center, 307 N Kickapoo Street, Lincoln. To
qualify for eligible school supplies assistance, heads
of household must apply in person and be able to provide written
documentation of all children in a household as well as financial
hardship. Only those families with children enrolled in grades K-5 who have
NOT received Back to School assistance from any
other agency for 2010-2011 may apply.
DATES TO REMEMBER:
Written Back to School application on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 between 2:00
p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
School supplies distribution on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, between 2:00
p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

YMCA
Before and After School has openings at District 27 schools,
C-EL and Olympia South. The program includes daily snack, physical
games and recreation, craft fun, homework assistance, character
building, reading program, table games, activities, and more. Call

YMCA
Preschool Play Center includes Preschool Play Days, which are
morning and afternoon sessions. Morning sessions are 9-11 a.m. and
the afternoon session is 12:15-2:15 p.m. Next, there is Lunch Bunch,
which runs Sept. 7 to May 20 from 11 to 11:30 a.m. The YMCA also has
Preschool PE from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. This is ongoing all
school year. All these preschool programs are for 3- to 5-year-olds.

Lincoln
Park District invites anyone interested in learning the game of
pickleball to join them on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. The group
will meet on the indoor tennis courts. Some equipment will be
provided for the first session. This first session will be free for

Pickleball is a simple paddle game played with a special perforated,
slow-moving plastic ball over a tennis-type net on a badminton-sized
court. The ball is served underhanded, swinging the paddle below the
waist, without bouncing it from the court. The ball is served to the
service zone on the opposite side of the net. Points are scored by
the serving side only and occur when the opponent faults. The server
continues to serve, alternating service courts, until the server
faults. A game is won by the first team that scores 11 points, but
play must continue until one team achieves a two-point margin.
