[August 23, 2010]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast to continue throughout the Northeast on Monday as a low pressure system becomes nearly stationary over the northeastern coast.

Flow associated with the low would continue ushering moisture inland, providing another round of precipitation throughout the day. Heavy rains were expected in the Northeast and New England regions and may cause flooding. Meanwhile, the head of an associated a cold front would trigger showers along the Mid-Atlantic coast as it pushed offshore. The tail of the aforementioned front would spark more showers and thunderstorms across the Southeast as it dropped southward to the Gulf Coast. Florida would also see wet weather, with locally heavy downpours in some thunderstorms.

Behind the active weather of the East, much of the central U.S. would experience calmer weather activity due to a dominant ridge of high pressure. The ridge would direct a low pressure trough from the Great Basin northward into southern Canada. A potent cold front associated with this system would move through the northern Plains with showers throughout the day, providing some relief from Sunday's hot daytime temperatures. Meanwhile, to the south, hot weather would persist across the southern Plains, with daytime highs expected to push past the century mark.

In the West, California would see a significant warming trend during the next couple of days as high pressure built into the state. Inland areas would experience the hottest temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, with daytime highs in the triple digits. More moderate warming was expected near the coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 116 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
