[December 06, 2010]  (AP)  The Pacific frontal system that brought rain showers to the California coast and significant snowfall to the high elevations of the Sierras on Sunday was forecast to trek farther inland across the West on Monday.

HardwareSnow across the Sierras was expected to taper off from west to east through Monday morning as the system pushed into the central Great Basin. Periods of heavy high-elevation snow and a mix of rain and snow across the valleys would make for slick morning commutes in eastern Nevada and Utah. Snow showers were forecast to linger through the afternoon before clearing by the late evening.

Behind this activity, another system was expected to produce scattered rain showers over the Pacific Northwest Coast and parts of northern California during the next couple of days.

Meanwhile, in the East, low pressure over the Northeast would bring moderate to heavy snow to northern Maine through Monday afternoon. Snowfall over the area was expected to then become light through afternoon and taper off by Tuesday morning. Cold northwest winds associated with this system would spread across the warm Great Lakes and aid in the development of prolonged lake-effect snow bands downwind of the lake bodies into the central and northern Appalachians. Lake-effect snow warnings and advisories were continued for portions of western Michigan and northern Indiana and from areas of northeastern Ohio through the Syracuse, N.Y. area.
