[December 08, 2010]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast to spread throughout the West on Wednesday as a strong Pacific storm system moved close to the coast.

As the storm's cold front pushed ashore, heavy rain was expected to descend from Washington and Oregon south into California's central coast. Inland, snow was anticipated throughout the Northwest and into Idaho, although heavy snowfall amounts were unlikely outside the coastal mountain ranges in the Northwest. Snow would also fall only at higher elevations due to the warm nature of this storm.

Away from the coast, the remainder of the West was forecast to see generally clear skies throughout the day as high pressure remained the dominant weather feature in the region.

That high was expected to also keep the Plains to the Mid-Atlantic dry and sunny Wednesday, but northerly winds on the eastern edge of the high would bring frigid temperatures southward from the Mississippi river eastward. On Wednesday night, high temperatures were forecast to dip below the freezing mark as far south as Florida, and temperatures in the single digits were anticipated throughout the Appalachian Mountain range.
