InsuranceStrong northwest winds were expected to bring more lake-effect snow to the southern and eastern shores of the Great Lakes, the central and northern Appalachians, and into northern New England through Wednesday night and Thursday morning. In the most persistent bands, storm totals could reach up to 12 inches and visibilities could drop to less than a quarter of a mile at times.

Farther south, cold air associated with high pressure over the Southeast would bring temperatures down to 15 degrees below average across the Tennessee Valley and into Florida.

Out West, a cold front extending from the northern Rockies southwestward across the Intermountain West and California was forecast to continue advancing eastward and southeastward, producing widely scattered rain and mountain snow showers from the coast to the northern Plains. Moreover, freezing rain and sleet was expected to develop over a part of the northern Plains on Wednesday morning. As the storm moved onto the southern Plains, another area of freezing rain would develop, including parts of Arkansas and the Tennessee Valley.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of minus 29 degrees at Crane Lake, Minn., to a high of 82 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
