The Circuit Breaker program provides annual grants to reimburse
eligible individuals for some of the money they paid for property
taxes, mobile home taxes, rent or nursing home charges. It also
offers $75 discounts on license plate renewal fees.
The pharmaceutical assistance -- Illinois Cares Rx -- can help
pay for approved medications for a wide range of medical conditions,
including Alzheimer's, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart and blood
pressure problems. If you have Medicare, Illinois Cares Rx will help
pay the costs that Medicare does not. If you do not have Medicare,
Illinois Cares Rx can still help with two levels of benefits:
Illinois Cares Rx Basic and Illinois Cares Rx Plus.
To qualify, citizens must be at least 65 years old, or at least
16 years old and totally disabled as established by the Social
Security Administration guidelines. Income guidelines also apply.
For more information, or to obtain a Circuit Breaker application,
contact the Illinois Department on Aging at 1-800-624-2459 or
www.state.il.us/aging. Applications and assistance are
also available through local senior services centers.
