[December 22, 2010]  (AP)  Southern California was expected to begin seeing some relief from persistent flooding rains Wednesday, but not before getting heavy precipitation throughout the morning hours.

InsuranceA second storm system was forecast to move through in the early afternoon, bringing one more period of heavy rain before pushing the precipitation inland. As the storm moved into the interior, snow levels in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains would briefly descend to lower elevations.

As the storm moved east, the West was expected to clear out for a couple days until Christmas morning. High temperatures throughout California were forecast to rise well above normal for this time of year on Thursday and Friday, but drop again Christmas Day as another storm approached.

In the East, a strong storm off the coast would continue sending occasional snow showers ashore, but these would be mostly limited to New England. High pressure was expected to generally keep the Mid-Atlantic clear of precipitation. The high was also expected to usher in cold air to the Midwest and eventually into the East over the next few days. A steady cooling trend was expected throughout the East until Friday, when temperatures will begin to moderate.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of minus 18 degrees at Wolf Point, Mont., to a high of 87 degrees at Brady, Texas.
