gov. pledges millions toward rail routes

ROCKFORD (AP) -- Illinois Gov. Pat
Quinn says the state will put millions toward passenger rail routes
from Chicago to Dubuque, Iowa, and the Quad Cities.

 Quinn told an audience in Rockford on Saturday that $60 million in
state capital funds will be used on a new Amtrak route between
Chicago and Dubuque, Iowa. The new service could result in up to
2,000 new jobs, including 650 construction jobs.
In Moline, he announced that the state will spend $45 million on
a route from Chicago to the Quad Cities. According to the governor's
office, that route could lead to 825 new jobs, including 440
construction jobs.
The announcements came just a few days after officials found out
the routes would not receive funding through the federal stimulus
package.
