Snow showers along with coastal rain were expected to continue over portions of the Carolinas and Virginia on Saturday morning, tapering off in the afternoon.
Further north, a very cold low pressure system over Saskatchewan and Manitoba with its cold front was forecast to move south across the Northern and Central Plains on Saturday, bringing widespread snow showers and extremely cold air. Total snowfall accumulations of 2 to 6 inches were expected.
Blowing and drifting snow were in the forecast for some areas, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous across the Northern Plains. Very cold arctic air was expected to accompany this system. Highs for Saturday and Sunday in the Dakotas will be only in the teens or single digits.
In the Northwest and the Northern Rockies, scattered rain showers and mountain snow showers were in the forecast for Saturday. A warm front was expected to bring more steady rain to the Pacific Northwest starting late Saturday morning. Rainfall was expected to increase Saturday night and Sunday morning as a cold front approached.
Elsewhere, snow showers were forecast to continue over the eastern Great Lakes and Central Appalachians.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of minus 19 degrees at International Falls, Minn., to a high of 79 degrees at Boca Raton, Fla.
