Beloit Blades Squirt C team advances to state

[February 16, 2010]  MADISON, Wis. -- The Beloit Blades Squirt C team upended the Middleton Wings Squirt C team 5-4 in double overtime Sunday to capture the WAHA Region 4 championship at the Madison Ice Arena. Hunter Harrington completed his hat trick when he scored on a breakaway with just 1:24 left in the second extra session. The wild game featured two goals by the Wings late in the third period, sending the game to overtime.

InsuranceMitch Ainger and Jake Karstetter also scored for the Blades, and Beloit goalie Zach Dewar kicked aside 20 shots to aid Beloit in the victory.

The rest of the Blades are Rees Graves, Owen Larson, Jack Cronin, Payne Mayfield, Zane Bastian, Taven Santucci and Alex Dewar. All made major contributions for the team to advance.

The Blades are coached by Steve Dewar and Kermit Voie with help from Todd Santucci and are managed by Jim Cronin.

Beloit now has a record of 19-10-3 and will play in the state tournament at the Ozaukee Ice Center in Mequon during the March 6 weekend.

Former Lincoln resident Payne Mayfield is a starting defenseman for the Blades. Mayfield has tallied a goal and five assists and has led the team in breakups and deflections. Earlier this season he was moved to center for a stretch when he was second in draws won. Payne is also working out as the team's backup goalie and won his only game between the pipes 8-3.
