[February 16, 2010]  (AP)  Snowy weather was expected to persist in New England and the Northeast on Tuesday.

A low pressure system was forecast to move northeast from the Ohio River Valley, allowing for flow around the system to pull moisture onshore from the Atlantic Ocean. Due to cold temperatures in the teens and 20s in the Northeast, the region could see between 2 and 4 inches of new snow. New England could see between 1 and 2 inches.

Snowfall in the Ohio River Valley was expected to diminish as the system moved out of the region, with only about an inch of new snow anticipated. A cold front extending south from the system was expected to quickly push offshore and into the Atlantic and end the wet and wintry weather over the Mid-Atlantic states.

Mild weather was expected behind the system as a strong ridge of high pressure continued building over the central U.S., allowing for sunny skies with cool, dry air pouring in from Canada.

Temperatures in the Southeast and southern Plains were expected to remain in the 40s and 50s, while the northern Plains could see wind chills below zero.

Another Pacific storm was forecast to approach the West Coast on Tuesday and push a cold front over Washington, which could kick up scattered showers with snow at higher elevations. Nearly an inch of rain was expected in most of northern Washington, while 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall in the Cascades. Overcast skies but no precipitation were expected to stretch over Oregon and northern California.

On Monday, temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from a low of minus 26 degrees at Jordan, Mont., to a high of 84 degrees at Whiteman, Calif.
