[February 23, 2010]  (AP)  Wet weather was expected to diminish over the eastern U.S. on Tuesday as a low pressure system pushed offshore.

HardwareThe system that brought scattered rain, freezing rain and snow as it moved from the Mississippi River Valley to the East Coast was expected to move off the East Coast into the Atlantic.

But the center of the low was forecast to linger over New England and pull additional moisture onshore, bringing another day of light snow and freezing rain to the Northeast. Accumulations of less than an inch were expected.

Flow around the system could also pick up moisture from the Great Lakes and allow for light snow to persist over the surrounding states. Less than an inch of snow was expected.

The Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states were expected to return to dry and warm conditions, with sunny skies and high temperatures in the 60s anticipated in the Southeast.

Behind this system in the central U.S., a strong ridge of high pressure was forecast to continue building over the Plains. Sunny skies and cool conditions were expected as strong flow from Canada continued to push cold and dry air in from the north. Temperatures in the northern Plains were expected to hover above zero, while the central Plains could see highs around freezing.

The southern Plains could see scattered snow and freezing rain, with the ridge expected to create a cold front over northern Texas and Oklahoma. Nearly 3 inches of snow could fall in some areas.

Out West, a low pressure system spinning in the Pacific was expected to push another cold front onshore, which could trigger scattered showers. Another 2 to 4 inches was expected in the Sierras, while lower elevations of the Pacific Northwest and northern California could see up to an inch of rain.

On Monday, temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from a low of minus 25 degrees at Shirley Basin, Wyo., to a high of 81 degrees at Punta Gorda, Fla.
