House Speaker Michael Madigan says the position of lieutenant
governor is unnecessary. His proposed constitutional amendment would
go before voters in November. The Chicago Democrat says he'd been
considering the move before Scott Lee Cohen won the Democratic
nomination in February. Cohen resigned after questions about past
allegations of domestic battery and steroids use.
The House Executive Committee voted 8-0 Wednesday to move the
idea to the House floor.
Three Republicans voted "present." They say the amendment should
wait. The number of such questions is limited on ballots, and the
GOP says a better idea for changing the charter might come along.
