University President Stanley Ikenberry says the cuts are needed
because the school is due $436 million in unpaid state
appropriations. On Tuesday, Quinn said the university should get
some relief after the state does a round of borrowing later this
month. That money will give the state some much-needed cash to pay a
backlog of bills.
To save money, the university is forcing its faculty and staff to
take four unpaid furlough days. Top administrators will take 10
days. Employees who make $30,000 or less are exempt.
Other state workers also have had to take furlough days as the
state grapples with a growing deficit.
