Feds renew effort to keep terrorism suspect jailed

[February 04, 2010]  CHICAGO (AP) -- Prosecutors say a Chicago man charged with a planning role in deadly November 2008 terrorist attacks in India must not be freed on bond because he faces a possible life sentence.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana (tah-HAW'-wer hoo-SANE' RAH'-na), the owner of a Chicago-based immigration service, was already facing a possible 30-year sentence in connection with plans to attack a Danish newspaper whose cartoons were offensive to much of the Islamic world.

Prosecutors said in court papers Friday, after Rana was charged in the Indian attacks, the possible sentence is now life -- all the more reason not to release him.

A voice mail seeking comment was left for Rana attorney Patrick Blegen.
