Lecture series to complement Elkhart tours in 2010

[February 04, 2010]  ELKHART -- The Elkhart Historical Society announces a Friday evening dinner lecture series that will complement the already popular Elkhart tours. Each lecture will be preceded by dinner at the Wild Hare Café in historic downtown Elkhart, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The lecture series will begin on March 12 with "Tales of Hog Marches and Cattle Kings." Bill Kemp, librarian and archivist at the McLean County Museum of History, will present "Pioneer Cattle and Hog Driving." The second talk of the evening will be "John Dean Gillett -- Cattle King of the World." Gillette Ransom, a direct descendent of Gillett, will give this talk on Elkhart’s famous resident.

The lecture on April 16 and April 23 will be "Elkhart Hill: The Biological and Cultural History of a Prairie Grove," by Bill McClain. To complement his talks, McClain will lead the Wildflower Nature Walks on April 17 and April 24 on Elkhart Hill.

On July 16, Bob McCue and Chuck McCue will speak on "Lincoln's Life on the 8th Judicial Circuit" and the "DAR 8th Judicial Circuit Markers." Their lectures will be followed by historical tours of Elkhart Hill the next day.
