Postville Courthouse Abraham Lincoln birthday celebration Feb. 6

[January 26, 2010]  The volunteers of Postville Courthouse once again invite you to attend their annual birthday celebration to honor Abraham Lincoln. The Postville Courthouse observance will be on Feb. 6 at 914 Fifth St., in Lincoln.

Every year this state historic site celebrates the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, who once practiced law in the courthouse that was at the site. He was a lawyer on the 8th Judicial Circuit before becoming the 16th president of the United States.

The original courthouse was purchased by Henry Ford in 1929 and moved to Dearborn, Mich. The courthouse that stands today is a replica that was built in 1953 as part of the city of Lincoln's centennial celebration.

A full schedule of events will kick off at noon. Logan County native Paul Beaver will once again be giving presentations. This year his topics will be the Logan County split between Lincoln and Douglas. Beaver, now retired and Lincoln College's first professor emeritus, is a nationally recognized Abraham Lincoln scholar. He is also well-known for his work as local historian and an advocate for the community of Lincoln. He will give presentations at 1:30 and 2:15 p.m. in the upstairs courtroom.

Mike Anderson will be another featured guest, performing throughout the afternoon. He is one of the most versatile folk performers in the Midwest. He will provide an entertaining presentation that will include music, storytelling and humor.

Linda Cox and Dorothy Salenger, the "Civil War Ladies," will give their presentation throughout the afternoon on dressing for afternoon tea of the Civil War era.

Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln interpreters will visit with guests, and period music will be provided by the ever-popular Postville Express throughout the afternoon. Postville volunteers will conduct tours and serve birthday cake and punch.
