[July 01, 2010]  (AP)  After making landfall, Hurricane Alex was forecast to weaken as it moved westward into northern Mexico on Thursday.

Even though the system would lose strength as it pushed inland, heavy rain bands and strong thunderstorms along with very strong winds would persist across southern Texas into Mexico. Heavy rains along and near the Texas-Mexico border may create chances of flash flooding and local urban flooding across the already heavily saturated regions.

Meanwhile, a nearly stationary front would remain stretched from the Carolinas into Texas on Wednesday. Energy from this disturbance and rich moisture availability throughout the Southeast would support another round of scattered showers, thunderstorms and periodic heavy rainfall from the Gulf Coast to just south of the frontal boundary.

To the north, low pressure would continue to spark light scattered showers in portions of New England, while high pressure would keep the Midwest and the Northeast under pleasantly warm temperatures.

In the West, the threat of severe weather activity would remain over Montana and western North Dakota as waves of low pressure moved across these regions into Canada. Elsewhere, a developing low would bring increasing clouds and chances of rain to the Pacific Northwest, while a lingering low pressure trough would keep relatively cool temperatures over the West Coast states.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Embarrass, Minn., to a high of 117 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
