[July 05, 2010]  (AP)  Active weather will continue throughout the central U.S. on Monday as a frontal system moves slowly through the Midwest.

Instability along the disturbance will combine with significant moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Alex to produce more rain and scattered thunderstorms from areas of the upper Great Lakes to the southern Plains. Periodic heavy rainfall and persistent showers will create chances of localized flooding and risks of flash flooding, primarily near the middle Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile, behind this system, a second cold front with limited moisture will approach the northern Plains with light showers and a chance of thunderstorms.

In the East, high pressure will strengthen over much of the Eastern Seaboard on Tuesday. As the system builds, daytime highs will continue to warm to well above normal values. In the Southeast, unsettled weather will continue across portions of the Gulf Coast. A non-tropical low in the western Gulf of Mexico and an associated frontal boundary will continue to pound areas along the central and eastern Gulf Coast and the Florida Peninsula with bands of showers and thunderstorm.

Dry and cooler weather conditions are expected in much of the West.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Chemult, Ore., to a high of 115 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
